Traffic Violations in North Carolina
Being stopped by the police for a traffic violation can be a nervous and unsetting situation. With each traffic ticket there is a possibility of having your driving privilege revoked or suspended. Also, you run the very real risk of having points on your driving record and more importantly having points added to your insurance policy.
Driver's license points are important because if you accumulate enough points in a certain period of time, the Division of Motor Vehicles may suspend your ability to drive.
Insurance points are important because with an increase in insurance points your insurance premium will increase and stay at the higher level for three years. The rate of increase on a basic policy is as follows:

A sample of convictions and their insurance points is as follows:
- 2 - Illegal passing, following too closely, speeding more than 10mph over the speed limit if your speed is over 55 mph but less than 76 mph.
- 3 - At-fault accidents resulting in property damage in excess of $1,500.00 but less than $2,500.00.
- 4 - Reckless driving, hit and run, passing a stopped school bus, speeding in excess of 75 mph when the speed limit is less than 70 mph (this offense can also suspend your driving privilege), speeding in excess of 80 mph when the speed limit is over 70 mph (this offense can also revoke your driving privilege).
- 8 - Driving with a revoked or suspended license.
- 10 - Racing or speeding to elude arrest.
- 12 - DWI
